President Obama’s Minimum Wage Hike Proposal is Wrong

During last night’s State of the Union address, President Obama called for a 24 percent increase to the minimum wage to $9 per hour, and to tie future increases to changes in the Consumer Price Index. The President’s goal is to help those in poverty, but his policy would do just the opposite.
The economics aren’t tough to understand. Businesses around the country that hire entry-level employees and pay them minimum wage—restaurants or grocery stores, for example—keep 2-3 cents in profit from each sales dollar, and can’t just absorb the 24 percent increase. Raising prices on cost-conscious customers typically isn’t an option, because sales fall as a result. Businesses are instead forced to provide the same product with less service—that means more self-service, and fewer job opportunities for entry-level and low-skill workers.
Look to an earlier proposal by the President to raise the federal minimum wage: Research published in the Southern Economic Journal, from economists at Cornell and American Universities, estimated that Obama’s previous proposal would have eliminated at least 467,000 jobs. The study also found that the higher minimum wage would not reduce poverty, as a majority of beneficiaries live in households with incomes around the poverty level.
It’s no wonder that eighty-five percent of the most credible economic research on the minimum wage from the last two decades points to job loss following a wage hike.
If our Chief Executive wants to reduce poverty and boost the economy, a minimum wage hike is not the answer.

Kanye West: Just A Sperm Donor For Kim Kardashian?

Kanye announced his and Kim’s pregnancy on Dec. 30, and while they both seem happier than ever to be expecting, their wonderful news has been tainted by Kim’s divorce battle with Kris Humphries. The shocking new report suggests that Kim dumped Kris because she knew he would be a bad father, and so she shacked up with Kanye instead.
“Kim wants everyone to think this pregnancy was completely spontaneous, but the truth is she made it happen,” an insider tells Star. “She totally used Kanye for his sperm — she’s been on the hunt for a sperm donor ever since splitting from Reggie Bush. As soon as she realized that Kris was a bad choice for a father, Kim ditched him and went after Kanye.”
That’s a pretty serious allegation! The source also says that Kim and Kanye were having hanky panky all day long to concieve.
They were “having sex every second of the day. Kanye definitely thought it was weird, but he didn’t think too much into it.”
What a typical man. The report also says that Kim pressured Kanye into having IVF with her, as she was struggling to conceive naturally.
“Kanye is way more into her than she is into him. He would do anything for her,” continued the source. “That’s why the sob story worked out and he agreed to the in vitro. But if he hadn’t agreed to it, she would have left him in a heartbeat and found a new baby daddy. Kim totally used Kanye for his sperm.”
Kim and Kanye seem so in love, so it seems unlikely that she sees him as nothing more than a sperm donor.

Beyonce To Drop Her $50m Pepsi deal?

Stella singer, acting sensation, and break out fashion designer, Beyonce, whose name is synonym with talent and success signed a deal worth $50 million with pepsiCO two weeks ago, and now a nutrition watchdog has urged Beyoncé Knowles to rethink her $50 million deal with Pepsi as the soft drink's "brand ambassador."

An open letter from the director of the CSPI to Beyonce reads,

Beyonce you have a unique position in the cultural life of this country and are an inspiring role model for millions of young people.

Your image is one of success, health, talent, fitness, and glamour. But by lending your name and image to PepsiCo, you are associating those positive attributes with a product that is quite literally sickening Americans.

I imagine that it must be hard for anyone to turn away $50 million. But this endorsement deal strikes me as particularly inappropriate, considering your popularity with America's young people and the extent to which Pepsi and other sugary drinks promote disease.

The New York Times attributed to you a statement that this endorsement agreement allows you “to work with a lifestyle brand with no compromise and without sacrificing [your] creativy.” It seems to me that this deal is actually an enormous comprise. In fact, I would characterize this as an even bigger compromise than your accepting $2 million to perform at the 2009 New Year’s Eve bash thrown by Hannibal Gaddafi, the famously violent son of the now-deceased Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

You realized that that arrangement was in error and wisely donated those proceeds to charity, I respectfully urge you to reconsider your arrangement with PepsiCo. If you move ahead with your promotional activities, you may wish to consider donating your proceeds to a hospital, diabetes organization or another reputable charity involved in the prevention or treatment of soda-related diseases.

Over 2,000 buildings destroyed in Ibadan rainstorm

PROPERTIES worth millions of naira were destroyed on Sunday night as rainstorm wreaked havoc in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

In all, about 2,000 buildings were said to be affected by the rainstorm.

Worst hit were Challenge, Felele, Podo, Soka, Sanyo, Olorunsogo and Amuloko areas, as many residents of the areas were rendered homeless, while their valuables were destroyed.
There were also unconfirmed reports of deaths in several places around the city.

A visit to Soka area by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that the rainstorm affected almost all the houses in the area, as residents were seen lamenting their losses when Nigerian Tribune got there on Monday morning.

Affected in the areas were residential buildings, churches, mosques, shops, schools and business offices.

It was gathered that a house in Idi-Oro area of Soka, which the owner had planned to move into on Monday, was reduced to debris, while another house around Oloje area had its roof totally blown off.

When the Nigerian Tribune visited a hospital in the area, it was gathered that a man was brought in around 12.30 a.m on Monday, reportedly hit by fallen debris of a building.

Also, three people, including a pregnant woman, were said to have been injured while on their way to sympathise with a relation whose house was affected by the rainstorm, as they were hit by a vehicle.

Other areas affected were Ajegunle, Igodalo, Academy, Omiyale, Olomi, Olunde, Ayegun, Aba-Alfa, Jaloke, Papa-Eleye, Aladi, Ire-Akari, all in Oluyole Local Government Area of the state.
At least five filling stations were badly damaged at Ire-Akari area along Olomi/ Academy and one at Olorunsogo, Akanran, Ibadan.

Around Soka area on the Ibadan/Lagos Expressway, the roof of a feedmill on 21A Anuoluwapo, street, Zone 2 was totally blown off, thereby destroying the feed product. The feedmiller, on resuming work in the morning was in shock, Nigerian Tribune learnt.

At Orita, the Divisional Police Headquarters, was not also spared. Nigerian Tribune learnt that the works department of the police had embarked on renovation of the police headquarters station which led to the removal of the station’s roof due for replacement on Monday, but before the work could commence on Monday morning, the station’s properties had been soaked in water.

At the Felele straight Expressway area, the roof of the new auditorium of the All Nations Evangelical Church, was also affected. Early in the morning, some members of the church were seen trying to pick some of the roofing sheets blown off by the rainstorm.

In the same axis, a private school, Montessori Careline, also had its roof blown off, while a storey building housing Jimbayad and Company at the Anfani junction was also affected.

At Idi-Arere junction, billboards situated in the confinement of the Power Holding Corporation of Nigeria (PHCN) transformer were completely blown away while some houses along the street also had a taste of the wind. Furthermore, some houses behind MUTLAD filling station were also affected.

The people of Olomi area and environs had their problem compounded as the storm destroyed most of the electric poles put in place by the PHCN for the restoration of electricity in the communities which had been in darkness for over 30 months.

A house under construction was brought down to its foundation by the storm at Ayedade area of Olomi. Though the owner was not around when the Nigerian Tribune visited, it was gathered that he was aware of the development and was making arrangement to visit the place.

As of the time of filing this report, no casualty has been recorded.

A mini drama, however, ensued at Olomi area when a 74-year-old grandma, indentified as Mama Kazeem rushed out of her room when the rain was still heavy for fear of being killed by the deadly storm.

A source informed the Nigerian Tribune that after the rain stopped, her neighbours discovered that there was no sound coming from inside her room, forcing them to raise the alarm that the old woman was missing after they had checked the room.

“We were scared when around 12.00 midnight we couldn’t find her. We then raised a search team among ourselves to search the vicinity. We searched the neighbourhood looking for Mama Kazeem but later found her after about 40 minutes in a house far away from our house, shivering.

“To our surprise, Mama: ‘I don’t want to die a useless death.’ At that point we couldn’t laugh but we understood that mama ran for her dear life for fear of being killed in case the building collapsed.”

Nigerian Tribune checks on some other parts of the city revealed that the United Missionary College, Ibadan was not spared as part of the school fence was brought down completely.
Another school situated at Oke-Ode, Sanyo Ibadan, Fola Model School had its roof blown off, a development which halted academic activities at the school as pupils were sent back home.

Some houses at Aba Ibeji, Arapaja in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State were also ravaged by the wind. One of the houses affected included that of an editor of Nigerian Tribune Mrs Tayo Lewis, whose house roof and fence were partly damaged. Nigerian Tribune also spotted other residents of the area who were trying to salvage their properties as their houses were totally brought down by the downpour with no hope of having a place to sleep.

Meanwhile, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has directed the State Emergency Management Agency to provide succour to the people affected by the rainstorm.

A statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dr Festus Adedayo said that Governor Ajimobi was deeply touched by the disaster which claimed several properties.

He said that the governor had also directed the council chairmen of all the affected areas to move round to assess the extent of damage and provide immediate relief to the affected persons.

Wizkid and girlfriend make surprise appearance at Banky W’s concert

In what may be termed as the surprise of the month, EME act, Wizkid made an appearance at Banky W’s ‘The Grand Love Project’ concert held yesterday, Friday, February 15, 2013 at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The 22-year-old superstar who has been throwing tantrums on social media, and is reportedly trying to disengage from the label, walked in about two hours after the show kicked off, accompanied by his girlfriend, Tani and a body guard. He did not get a rousing welcome from fans nor a mention from Banky W. The event’s MC, Seyi Law also did not acknowledge him.

At exactly, 1:10 am, our reporter spotted him leaving with his train. He left in a red BMW car with number plate, ‘W’ accompanied with two jeeps and soldiers.

Did Goldie do drugs? And was her death a result of an overdose?

Did she traffic in controlled substances, those early days before she settled with music? The answer is YES and NO, depending on who you ask.

While many speculate that the late entertainer traded in hard drugs many years back, and favoured smoking stuff, those close to her told NET over the weekend that nothing could be further from the truth.

A bold PM News article alleged she died of drugs overdose, but several friends who spoke with us say the drug rumours are ‘unfounded ‘and evil.

‘She didn’t smoke, even though she had close friends who did‘, one associate who worked with her for years told us.

And her husband Andrew has told all those peddling the rumours to back off…

Meanwhile, a Lagos-based medical doctor and Nigerian Entertainment Today analyst is giving a medical explanation, about possible cause of death. Read below

The sudden death of Goldie came as a surprise to many people. She was said to have developed severe headache at home after arriving Nigeria after a long flight and was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. So what could have led to her sudden death?
Many reports say she died of pulmonary embolism from a deep venous thrombosis. This is because she developed symptoms shortly after arriving from a long flight. Deep Vein thrombosis is a condition in which a thrombus (a blood clot) forms in a vein. A thrombus can form in any vein in the body, however it is commoner in veins of the leg (especially in the calf) and pelvic (hip) region. A blood clot can form as a result of sluggish blood flow e.g. after a long period of immobility (long air travel immobility and prolonged bed rest of more than 4 days), injury to the blood vessel and hyper-coagulable states (conditions in which the blood clots easily). It can also occur in normal individuals with no apparent cause. Clots can also form from tumour cells, fat cells from a fracture, amniotic fluid and any foreign material from intravenous drug use. A major complication of a Deep vein thrombus is Pulmonary embolism. This is when clots within the vein is dislodged and enters the arteries that supply the lungs thus reducing perfusion to the lungs and ultimately to lung collapse and death. Symptoms of pulmonary embolism include central chest pain, cough, breathlessness, dizziness, fainting amongst others but it may also be silent with no symptoms.
Another possible cause is an intra-cerebral haemorrhage (bleeding into the brain). This is because reports say she complained of a severe headache which is typical of a Sub-arachnoid haemorrhage which can be fatal. Symptoms of a subarachnoid haemorrhage include a sudden severe headache, vomiting, seizures and coma. Some other causes of Sudden death include Arrhythmias (when the heart starts beating out of control), Acute myocardial infarction (due to inadequate blood supply the heart), hidden congenital heart defects.
Details of other symptoms that she might have had apart from the headache that can help unravel this mystery is not known.
We also don’t know how long she was alive for before they could get her to the hospital; even though she lived in Ikoyi and the hospital is in Victoria Island; there might have been some delay in getting to the hospital due to the valentine day traffic.
Perhaps if we had a functioning ambulance system with trained paramedics who could get access to her and administer advanced life support in a few seconds or minutes of developing symptoms; she might have survived.
Owing to the paucity of facts about her full medical history -whether she had risk factors for common causes of sudden death like a heart abnormality, hypertension, if she was on any pills etc, we can only make conjectures as to her real cause of death.
The true cause of her death can only be determined if an autopsy is performed.

The war between the EME boss "Banky W" and Wizkid has taken a different dimension and it looks like Wizkid will maintain his stands on leaving the EME crew. We got news from a relaiable source in the team that banky W recently slamed wizkid on twitter following a phone conversation between the both of them. It was learnt that during the conversation, BankyW was pleading with Wizkid to change his decision on his exit from the team but wizkid payed deaf ears and said his decision stands, But since BankyW has been trying to control the situation and prevent the news from getting to the public, he begged wizkid to show up at his album launch and surprisingly wizkid turned him down, this made BankyW mad and felt so disappointed about wizzy's decision.
