Please let Goldie rest in peace

Trying to sensationalise Goldie’s marital status after her death is sad and an obvious failure on the part of some of the Nigerian press.
It is amazing that our press claims to know so much about the late singer’s background. Her father’s successful banking career and clergy status, her late mum’s exemplary top management banking career and little Susan’s involvement in the church. Yet, despite the one thousand and one interviews she granted, nobody seemed to EVER ask her in lifetime how she got the name HARVEY, since her Dad and Mum don’t bear that name. Investigative journalism is now a thing of the past, only done by people who “are not so busy”.
In these days of junk journalism and lazy copying and pasting in the name of blogging, it is no surprise that a lot of ‘writers’ would cast aspersions on her and insinuate a lot of negative things just to drive traffic to their blogs. They would come up with screaming headlines such as ‘Goldie’s most hidden secret unveiled as husband shares intimate pictures’, ‘The many lies of Goldie’, ‘Goldie and her un-golden side,’ ‘The many things Goldie did not achieve …we planned to have a child this year – husband’,  amongst others.
But how many of them would take time to appreciate the woman who was able to successfully separate her marital life from her career? How many would find out if her true friends and close associates knew her marital status but chose to respect the vow of silence? How many would truly want to find out and respect the reason she chose to be silent on her marital status?
Let us be fair, let us be reasonable in trying to commercialise her death on the pages of magazines and blogs. Let’s do a little finding out before the next post.
Personally, though I didn’t think of her as a great artist, I respected her hustle, I respected her never say die spirit,  I respected her desire to succeed, I loved Skibobo Ribobo and was hoping it would make her blow big time.
And before you ask, NO. She was not my friend.

How Goldie died on arrival from US

Kennis Music, label  of the late singer, Goldie Harvey  has officially confirmed the shocking and untimely passage of the  pop star.
A terse statement issued by the President of music outfit, Keke Ogungbe, midnight Thursday reads: “With a deep sense of loss, we announce the shocking death of our darling music star, Goldie Harvey. Goldie, 31, died on Thursday after she complained of a severe headache shortly after her arrival from the United States where she went to witness the Grammy Award.
“She was rushed from her Park View, Ikoyi, Lagos residence to her official hospital, Reddington, Victoria Island, Lagos, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival at exactly 7:30pm in the evening. We consider this period a gloomy moment for us and the entire Nigerian music industry in view of the circumstance in which she passed away; the abundance of talent she exhibited in her short but eventful music career and the various opportunities her trip to the United States of America would have availed her.
“She is survived by her father, step- mother, brothers and sisters. We deeply sympathise with her family and fans all over the world and very grateful to all and sundry, especially, the vibrant Nigerian media for their concern and prompt reportage.
“We shall keep everybody informed as events unfold as we are devastated by the sudden loss.” Meanwhile, the remains of Goldie who hails from Ekiti State has been deposited at the mortuary of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos. Goldie represented Nigeria at the Big Brother Star Game in 2012. Her latest effort, she described as three nawti singles from her forthcoming African Invasion album are “Skibo”. “Miliki” and ” Got To Have It,” presently enjoying heavy rotations on radio and TV stations across the continent. Burial arrangements will be announced by the family. May her soul rest in peace.
Adieu Goldie!!!
There had been rumour that the late singer was engaged to fellow Housemate, Prezzo, who had come to Nigeria shortly after the Big Brother competition, to appease her of his wrongdoings. Everyone was looking forward to their wedding in 2013. Born Susan Filani,Goldie as she is fondly called change her name to Susan Harvey on arrival from England.

Life & Times Of Goldie Harvey (RIP)

Goldie was born on the 22nd of October, 1982 in Ogun State, Nigeria to a family of four kids. Her mother passed in 1994 after a battle with cancer when Goldie was just 12.
The first of four kids, Goldie’s education began at the Green Springs Montessori Primary School and then St. John’s College, Palm Grove, Lagos. She attended University Of Sunderland in the UK to study Business Management where her love for music blossomed into what will be a prosperous career.
She returned to Nigeria in the mid-2000s to kick start her music career. She met renowned producer, OJB Jezreel who would produce her first single, Komole. This was followed by three other singles Spin Me, Nothing has Changed, and Shift, which all formed part of her compilation CD. Goldie was signed on to Nigeria’s foremost music label, Kennis Music in 2010 and after a few months, released her debut album, Gold. The album contained hits that took her to the fore front of Nigerian homes. You Know It, JawoJawo and DTMB (Don’t Touch My Body) were all popular in their own right.
Goldie was always known for her creative and provocative videos that pushed the limits of imagination. The video for ‘You Know it’ won the best female video at the 2010 SoundCity Music Video Awards and also picked the award for best use of costume at the Nigerian Music Video Awards; while DTMB picked up best Afro Pop video at the 2011 Nmva’s. The video for SAY MY NAME received BEST POP COSTUME at the Nigerian Music Video Awards (NMVA) in December 2012. She was also honoured with a SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD at Top Naija music awards same month.
Goldie is an ambassador of Project Alert, a world renowned not for profit organisation aimed at advocating Zero tolerance to all forms of violence against women and young girls. She has also claimed numerous awards including Exquisite Lady of the year (ELOY), Best Female Artiste award and City People Best Female Artiste of the year. She has also been inducted as a Federal Celebrity Special Marshal alongside other notable Nigerian Celebrities.
Goldie broke into the continental scene when she entered into the Big Brother Africa Celebrity star game, and was the 3rd runner. Her relationship with Kenya’s Prezzo got her a lot of fame but the right and wrong reasons amongst fans.
At the time of her death, she was working on an album, The African Invasion, with 3 singles, SKIBOBO featuring AY (Tanzania), MILIKI featuring NAVIO (Uganda), and GIVE IT TO ME featuring J MARTINS (Nigeria), already in heavy rotation. The album was intended to feature some of the finest sounds from Africa, and features artists from various countries.
Her body of work speaks for itself, whether you’re a fan or not, you can’t help but admit that there was only one Goldie in Nigeria. Almost in a genre of her own. A dynamic artist always pushing limits of imagination.

Man Turns Into Snake After Giving 5 US Dollars To School Boy Tweet boy turns into snake US$5 Feb 15, 2013 - Man Turns Into A Deadly Snake After Giving $5 US Dollars To School Boy In Zimbabwe There was panic in Kuwadzana yesterday afternoon when rumours circulated that a snake had mysteriously entered a Grade Two pupil’s tummy after he got US$5 worth of ‘miracle money’ from a stranger. The minor (name withheld) is said to have picked a R2 coin before meeting the man whom later gave him a US$5 note. Claims are that the man, in white robes, mysteriously appeared in front of the boy at the school and handed the minor US$5 before disappearing with the boy and later turning into a snake, which got into the boy’s mouth. Our news crew visited the boy’s parents where upon arrival, residents and school children had mobbed the child’s lodgings (address provided) jostling to haven a glimpse of the boy who had to be locked into another room by his father. The father left his house and took refuge at a neighbour’s houe to divert attention from his son, who was complaining of stomachaches. The father also wanted to address members of the crowd who might have something to offer. Some were pleading to give parents advice to help the boy and others claimed to be members of some apostolic sects who had dealt with similar problems. Father to the little boy, Pedzisai, said he was equally confused as to what had happened to his son. However, he looked convinced that something out of the ordinary had indeed happened to his son. And whatever it is was proved serious enough to make him rush his son to Highfield – tailed by a huge crowd – where he received some prayers. “I was at home when two pupils came here saying my son had picked a 2 Rand coin which later turned into a US$5 note. Reports are that a certain man in white robs appeared and handed him the money and disappeared with him. The man was said to have turned into a snake which later entered his tummy through the mouth. He is currently complaining of stomach pains. We rushed him to Highfield, with a huge crowd following and there, it was CONFIRMED that it had indeed happened,” said Pedzisai who sounded convinced that indeed a snake had entered into his son. Our news crew managed to talk to the little boy but he denied picking up the 2 Rand coin. “I did not pick the coin but I passed near it and some boys started shouting that I had picked the coin. I do not want to learn there again,” he said. The father said he wants to transfer his son from Kuwadzana 5 council Primary School. “I went to the school and demanded him out. He was just crying and confused as he was being pulled in different directions with some pupils shouting at him,” he said. Mother to the boy, Lucia said: “He is just saying he has stomach pains but he is ok. He is denying picking the coin. He has told me three times that he does not want to go to the school again.” Another source however claimed that after the snake incident, the minor returned to class, acting strangely and head butted another pupil who bled but the blood was never seen. Angry parents were baying for the blood of the headmistress who was reportedly out of office. “There is something with that school as another pupil also acted funny in the past,” a parent said. The school deputy head, Mrs Gunje dispelled the claims saying: “Nothing of the sort happened here. Everything is progressing well and the child ws even denying such claims.” Many different versions of the story were reported and some were even taking the matter as far as linking it to the much controversial ‘miracle money’. “I once told people who love freebies so much that one day they will get into trouble with this miracle money thing. Now you see miracle money has turned into a snake. Nhamo inamo zvayo miracle money idyai mega,” said a man in his early 20s after My Zimbabwe asked what had taken place. However, considering the way the boy was so afraid and looked traumatised, it was pretty evident and painted all over that some so mysterious had taken place. So dreaded was the young boy that he didn’t want to mention anything about the snake. All he could freely saw was that he doesn’t want to go back to that school. More Americans leaving U.S. over taxes

Would you renounce your U.S. citizenship if it meant you’d be sending less of your hard-earned dollars to Uncle Sam?

As Americans face higher taxes and stricter enforcement, a growing number of them are, indeed, deciding to turn in their US passports. As of 2013, 77% of Americans will pay higher federal tax rates because the cuts in Social Security payroll taxes expired when Congress passed its tax package on New Year’s Day.

But the wealthiest households face the highest tax increases. From 2009 to 2011, the number of expatriates, or those who renounced their U.S. citizenship, doubled to 1,781.

Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group, which provides financial services for expatriates, said that since the start of this year, 48% more of his clients in January than in a typical month inquired about moving funds abroad and the possible tax implications of changing citizenship.

The income tax rate rose this year to 39.6% from 35% for individuals earning more than $400,000 a year and married couples earning more than $450,000.

The Tax Policy Center estimated that those who earn more than $1 million would pay an average of  $170,341 more in taxes.

Green said there’s a tipping point for most people with regard to tax issues affecting their choice of location and citizenship. “If there’s only 10% tax [on income], no one would be leaving. But if there’s 90%, then most people would leave,” he said.

Federal taxes aren’t the only issue, though. Increases in state income tax rates factor into these decisions as well. Recently, California enacted Proposition 30, which raised state income tax rates to 10.3% from 9.3% for individuals making at least $250,000 and 13.3% from 10.3% for those earning at least $1 million. Golfer Phil Mickelson publicly voiced his concern over the tax increases and threatened to leave California because of the higher rates.

Famous Faces
In the first three quarters of 2012, more than 1,100 people left the United States, according to the Federal Register, which tracks Americans who renounce their citizenship. (The Federal Register doesn’t make note of why these people give up their citizenships; we can only guess there are financial considerations in many situations.) Among them, one of the most high-profile examples was Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, who filed to relinquish his U.S. citizenship in September 2011; Facebook had its initial public offering in May 2012. Saverin, a Brazil native, had already been living in Singapore for three years after emigrating to the U.S. in 1998. He could reportedly save as much as $100 million in taxes because Singapore does not tax capital gains.

Saverin isn’t the only famous renunciation. Singer and socialite Denise Rich also gave up her citizenship last year under her maiden name, Denise Eisenberg. She is well-known as the ex-wife of former international fugitive Marc Rich, a commodities trader who was indicted on 50 counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, racketeering and other charges. But on his last day in office in 2001, former president Bill Clinton pardoned Rich. Reports claimed that Eisenberg gave up her citizenship to be closer to her long-time partner, an Austrian citizen. Austria also has tax benefits for nationals who live abroad for more than half the year.

Chinese kung fu star and actor Jet Li held American and Chinese citizenships, but dropped both in 2009 in order to be a citizen in Singapore. (Singapore prohibits dual citizenship.) In interviews Li indicated that he chose Singapore because it was free from paparazzi and provided language opportunities for his children.

Most recently, actor Gerard Depardieu made headlines for renouncing his French citizenship to become a Russian citizen in order to avoid France’s proposed 75% tax on earned income above $1.4 million. Russia has a flat 13% tax rate.

Ready to Tear Up Your Passport?
According to a 2012 study published by the Research Institute of Industrial Economics that examined the mobility of billionaires over the past two decades, “70% [of those billionaires] have migrated from higher to lower capital gains tax country … One-third of the billionaires that moved went to small countries defined as ‘tax havens,’” including Switzerland, Bahamas and Singapore.

If you want to join the pack, the process to renounce your citizenship isn’t very difficult.

The U.S. Department of State says that in order to do so, one must “appear in person before a U.S. consular or diplomatic officer, in a foreign country (typically at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate); and sign an oath of renunciation.”

But before you take the plunge, be aware that if you forego your U.S. citizenship, there’s no turning back. The U.S. government won’t reinstate it if you change your mind later — so think it over carefully.

In 1965, movie star Elizabeth Taylor attempted to expatriate to keep her European income from being subject to American tax law. But she did not get approval from the State Department because she refused to disavow “all allegiance to the United States of America.”

And you might be saving money in the long run, but you still have to pay an “exit” tax, according to the Heroes Earnings Assistance and Relief Tax Act passed in 2008. This applies to those whose net worth is $2 million or more, or whose annual income tax average for the past five years is $145,000 or more (as of 2008 and adjusted annually for inflation each year). One exception applies to people who were born with dual citizenships. For the exit tax, a 15% tax applies to capital gains above $651,000, and tax on other assets like a retirement account, would be at the normal income rate up to 39.6%. These assets are taxed as if the individual were selling or withdrawing their monetary funds from the accounts on the last day of their American citizenship.

Already Living Abroad?

So is giving up your rights and privileges as a U.S. citizen worth it? If you live and conduct business mostly in the U.S., it may not be the best decision. Renouncing your citizenship isn’t just about taxes— it also means no more protection from the U.S. government; possible issues with travel visas, including traveling and staying in the U.S. for long periods of time.

But it may be worth it if you already live in a foreign country. The U.S. is one of the few nations that taxes its citizens regardless of where you live in the world. As long as you remain a U.S. citizen, you will be taxed on your income even if you’re living abroad. But if you aren’t a citizen and live in a foreign country, you don’t need to pay any income tax.

“[Renunciation] seems to be more pronounced with Americans, and that’s more with Americans currently living abroad,” Green said. “It’s easier if you’ve already left the country. There are less factors involved [in changing citizenships].”

In the case of Saverin, he was already living in Singapore and did not have deep ties to the U.S. because he hadn’t been here very long. In his case, the financial benefits were clear: he would’ve paid a 35% federal tax rate in the U.S. in addition to 15% on capital gains, while in Singapore his tax rate would be  20% at most and no capital gains tax.

So how would your tax burden stack up? If you earn $1 million a year, that’s almost $396,000 you’re keeping in your pocket (based on the top 39.6% income tax rate) if you said goodbye to the U.S. and took up residency in a place like Monaco, which doesn’t tax income at all. If you were to earn the median household income of $50,054, according to the Census Bureau, then you’d be saving $12,500 (based on a 25% federal tax bracket).

The chart above shows the growing trend of expatriates in the U.S. The Federal Register first started recording the number in 1997. (The high number of expatriations that year is thought to be a result of Hong Kong reverting back to Chinese sovereignty, according to tax attorney Andrew Mitchel. Chinese citizens are not allowed to have dual citizenship, so many Hong Kong residents renounced their U.S. citizenship prior to Hong Kong joining China in 1997, so they would become fully Chinese citizens.)
When it comes to changing nationalities though, Asia seems to be the popular country of choice, Green said. He sees many clients leaving the U.S., the U.K. and other European nations and moving to Asia. “In Hong Kong a person can be paying as little as 15% for income tax, and in New York it can be 40%,” he said. Many Middle Eastern countries don’t tax income at all.

“If you don’t mind where you live and the tax becomes excessive, then leaving might be a good choice,” Green said. “Countries have less of a hold on people. Governments have to raise more taxes, but they can’t go too far.”

Goldie allegedly died from pulmonary embolism

According to sources from Reddington hospital, where Goldie died last night, the likely cause of her sudden death is pulmonary embolism.
According to an article on the New York Times website, “Life-threatening blood clots and flying have been linked for more than 50 years, but a new study of business travelers confirms the risk, particularly for those who take long flights or fly frequently.
“Immobility is considered a major factor behind the condition, called deep vein thrombosis.
“But while it is often referred to as “economy-class syndrome” because of the cramped seating there, D.V.T. also occurs among those who fly in business class and first class, the researchers found.
“People who fly four hours or more, the study found, have three times the risk of developing clots compared with periods when they did not travel.
“D.V.T. occurs when a blood clot forms within the large deep veins of the body, usually in the leg. If untreated, part of the clot may break off and travel to the lungs, where it can cause a pulmonary embolism, a potentially fatal condition.”
According to close friends, the singer and former Big Brother contestant, was a frequent traveller and had complained of stress in the past weeks, but insisted she was fine.

Topless gay activists celebrate Pope’s resignation..
A group of militant feminists yesterday, Tuesday, February 11, 2013 cheered in celebration of Pope Benedict XVI‘s shocking resignation announcement by marching topless inside the famed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France.
The nine breast-baring rebels who are members of the hard-core Ukrainian protest group FEMEN, had slogans written in black paint across their bare chests and backs that read, ‘Pope no more’, ‘Game over’, ‘No more homophobe’ and ‘Bye bye Benedict’.
The FEMEN women’s power group who have been making headlines since 2010 for topless feminist, pro-democracy and anti-corruption protests in Russia, Ukraine and London said they were protesting what they called the church’s continued stance against equal rights for women and gays.
Pope Benedict XVI stunned the world on Monday when he announced his decision to step down as pontiff, citing deteriorating health and advanced age. He is the first pope to resign in almost 600 years.

The story continues…
Early this week, Banky W released the official tracklist for his fourth solo album, ‘R&BW’ and just as we guessedformer EME label act Wizkid is missing from the tracklist.
The album features other EME signees Skales, Niyola and Shaydee, among other cameos, such as rappers Lynxxx, Vector, eLDee, M.I, L-Tido, Sarkodie, singers Sammy, Rotimi and 2face Idibia.
Wizkid seems to have other plans too – after spending many weeks in the UK, he has released his first post-EME video, a new collaborative single titled ‘The matter‘ which features production from UK based Maleek Berry.
The video opens with ‘Starboy Ent’ – the new label allegedly owned by Wizkid. There is no sign of the usually seen EME logo.
At this point, is there still any point in denying that both parties may have gone their separate ways?
Many say the determining factor will be  whether or not Wizkid shows up at Banky W’s ‘The Grand Love’ concert in Lagos on Friday, February 15, 2013.
Wiz has already told us he will be premiering another video ‘Azonto’ that same day and will be performing at Julius Agwu’s ‘Festival of Love’ on February 16, 2013.
We watch and wait…
